The Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault (MOCSA) has broken ground on the nonprofit’s new home in Kansas City, Missouri. The new location, designed by Kansas City-based architecture and interior design firm Generator Studio, will more than double the organization’s current physical capacity.
“Since 1975, MOCSA has been a place for survivors and now through collaboration with Generator Studio, we’ve been able to create a new location to meet the growing demand for services,” said Julie Donelon, MOCSA MSW, President & CEO. “This new home will serve as a physical representation and a space to honor survivors, a symbol of the unique support that Kansas City has provided to survivors for nearly 50 years, through MOCSA.”
At the event, guests toured the existing building and previewed renders of what will be Kansas City’s first space developed specifically for programs to support survivors and prevent sexual violence. A space we’re collaborating with MOCSA on as the project’s architect, interior designer, and graphic designer. Even more cause of celebration was Congressman Emanuel Cleaver’s presentation of $1 million in funding for the project!
The 40,000 sq. ft. facility at 6500 Euclid Ave. will see a transformation from a data center originally built in 1994 into a survivor-centered and trauma-informed space with the introduction of a 1,200 sq. ft. skylight addition, a welcoming glass facade to let in natural light, a private outdoor area, and an acoustic privacy strategy to accommodate the sensitive nature of the nonprofit’s work.
