40,000 SF Renovation
MOCSA

Generator Studio is partnering with the nonprofit Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault (MOCSA) to design the organization’s new home that will serve clients across six counties in the bi-state Kansas City metropolitan area. Generator is providing architecture, interior design, and graphic design services for the new facility, creating a comprehensive and cohesive design approach.

With its new 40,000 SF facility, the organization will more than double its physical capacity and be Kansas City’s first space developed specifically for programs to support survivors and prevent sexual violence.

Previously a data center, Generator’s renovated design features a 1,200 sq. ft. skylight addition to let natural light into the building that’s two-thirds buried. The ingress’ glass facade creates a welcoming entrance outside and a warm inside environment flushed with light. In addition to natural light, the lighting strategy allows for flexibility and ultimate control of the lighting to adapt to clients and staff alike.

Scope discussions led to solution-based designs that meet the needs of the organization’s workforce and clients—including cafe areas, a large training room, and private crisis line phone rooms. As the graphic designer for the space, Generator’s wayfinding and environmental graphics contribute to an accessible, survivor-centric space. In addition, dimensional installations and custom artwork thread themes core to MOCSA’s important work throughout the facility.

Unlike the nonprofit’s previous location inside a multi-tenant office tower, the organization’s new facility includes an open outdoor area made private through thoughtful landscaping. The serene exterior setting has several uses including therapy, outdoor work, recreation, and a place for employees to enjoy lunch while connecting with nature. Additionally, a rooftop patio on the building’s second floor offers a gathering space for MOCSA to host community partners and events.
