The Refinery

Situated along the Kansas City Streetcar route in the Crossroads Arts District, The Refinery at 1818 Main Street, will provide one of Kansas City’s most popular neighborhoods with a new 147-unit multi-family building among the urban thread.

Paying homage to Kansas City’s Art Deco influence, The Refinery features a sense of verticality defined by its 16-floor street-facing steel facade, inspired patterning, and vertical window treatments. To tie into the historic network of the Crossroads, brick is used at the lower levels to maintain its place along an existing row of businesses as an urban infill development.

Originally built as the Southwest Boulevard State Bank and later known as the Main Street Bank State Bank, the stone building that once stood on the site will have its original stone entrance repurposed as the lobby fireplace, preserving a piece of the century-old bank’s legacy.

Bookended by existing buildings on each side, the midblock site footprint provides pedestrian-focused spaces at Main St. with primary building entry and retail space along the streetcar line. The parking structure is concealed for the full height by apartment units with access only via the alley. Additionally, the project provides a rooftop community space featuring a wading pool and an outdoor pool bar.

Apartments include studios, 1-bedroom, and 2-bedroom apartments, with a mix of units offering walkout balconies and Juliet balconies. The building transitions from a combined apartment and garage structure to an apartment tower starting at the fifth floor. This step creates private terraces for each fifth-floor unit, offering views to the north or south.

With Main Street and the Kansas City Streetcar stop as principal features of The Refinery’s locale, the building is deeply integrated into the fabric of the Crossroads, connecting residents to where they work and play.
