Home to the NWSL’s Kansas City Current, The University of Kansas Health System Training Center is a world-class facility that advances the team’s mission to set the standard for the future of women’s sports. Featuring three professional-grade practice pitches—two grass and one FIFA-approved turf pitch—totaling over 25,000 square yards, the center exemplifies the organization’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and growth.
The training center was constructed with CLT, a layered wood material bonded by adhesive making it lightweight and strong, making it the first professional training facility to be built with a cross-laminated and mass timber structure. With 50-60% lower embodied carbon than other construction methods, the design complements the glulam columns, beams and CLT panels via metal cladding and glass.
The facility’s layout is focused on all aspects of player health including training (elite weight, cardio and recovery assets), nutrition (high performance chef, locally-sourced menus) and sports medicine care (specialized healthcare for female athletes). Locker rooms, weight and cardio rooms, nutrition and wellness areas, outdoor gathering spaces and front office staff are all included in the design, strategically unifying the team, coaches, staff and players under one roof.
