Community engagement in the city of Chanhassen underscored a strong desire for enhanced recreation amenities, particularly an indoor walking track, additional ice, and expanded community space.
As the sports facility design expert, Generator Studio partnered with BKV Group to refine and advance a two-level community center concept that responds directly to these priorities, emphasizing wellness, community connection, and year-round activity.
The facility includes two ice rinks—one with seating for 1,600 that can expand to 3,500 for graduations and large events, and a second rink with seating for 750. A unique split-entry design separates players and spectators: parents and visitors enter from the second level, where all spectator seating is located, while athletes access the 8 community locker rooms and 2 high school team suites.
A major anchor of the design is the 40,000 SF fieldhouse on the lower level, offering both sport courts and turf. Approximately half of the space includes three basketball courts convertible to three volleyball or nine pickleball courts, while the remaining 19,000 SF is indoor turf. Above, an eighth-mile suspended walking track connects directly to the main concourse and overlooks activity throughout the building.
To broaden the facility’s use to all ages, the design also includes a 3,400 SF indoor playground, a 3,500 SF fitness center, flexible community gathering rooms, a catering kitchen, and space for other community uses.
The Chanhassen Community Center Construction officially broke ground in August 2026, with substantial completion targeted for late summer 2028 and the facility set to open that September.
