Earlier this month the Child Protection Center (CPC) gathered in the employee break area to celebrate one year in their new Generator-designed office space. Now it’s our turn to take a moment and celebrate the occasion and the design of CPC’s new home.
Child Protection Center provides the Greater Kansas City community with a safe space to heal from, report, and prevent acts of child abuse and violence. The site selection and interior design of the new space needed to not only meet the growing needs of the organization but also reflect its identity and level of care.
“Generator Studio really listened to us,” said Lisa Mizell, Child Protection Center CEO. “They took the time to learn about us and the people we serve. Our core belief has always been that you are deserving of respect no matter how you’ve been treated in your past, and Generator was able to deliver a space that helps us uplift every person that crosses our threshold.”
Since the new space opened in July 2023, the Child Protection Center has seen an increase in services provided and the workforce it needs to accommodate those services. CPC has welcomed six new staff members to address the number of children the new space is helping. Additionally, Generator designed a first-floor space with three forensic interview rooms, allowing the organization to triple-book interviews and assist with more clients.
Through just six months in 2024, the organization has completed 539 interviews—more than 64% of the total interviews completed in 2022 and 54% of the total interviews in 2023.
Not only has the number of interviews increased but the quality of the interview audio has, too. With special consideration to the sensitive nature of services, design included multiple sound-softening systems to negate voices from carrying and remove outside noise from the interview rooms. The same sound-softening can be found in leadership offices to keep sensitive conversations from carrying.
“For us, it was important to not only design a space that was welcoming and safe for clients but functional for Child Protection Center’s employees to carry out their important services and complementary to their growth,” said Christina Franklin, Generator Studio Director of Interior Design.
Continuing CPC’s tradition of employees eating lunch together, a spacious break area is a focal point on the second floor, doubling as an entertainment space for hosting events. Additionally, the open office space is equipped with a quiet room for employees, offering a space for service providers to step away and collect themselves between sessions.
Throughout the two-story space, warm woods and cool, calming blue tones, not only foster a sense of calm but employ color theory to evoke feelings of trust and security. The same color palette can be found in the mural adorning the CPC’s exterior wall, created by Kansas City-based design company Sike Style Industries.
